A Family Tradition Since 1990
What started over three decades ago as a passion for the river has grown into a lifelong mission to share the water with our community. As a family-owned and operated business, we don’t just see you as a customer—we see you as a guest in our "backyard."
When we opened our doors in 1990, we made a promise to keep things simple: provide great gear, reliable timing, and a friendly smile. Today, that hasn’t changed. We know that a day on the river is about more than just paddling; it’s about disconnecting from the noise and reconnecting with friends and family.
Whether it's your first time in a kayak or your fiftieth trip in a canoe, our family is here to ensure your shuttle is on time and your gear is ready to go. We handle the heavy lifting so you can soak up the sun.
We can’t wait to be a part of your next river memory.
The early bird doesn't just get the worm—they get the best views on the James River! Starting today, February 14th, we are officially "fixing to start" our 2026 season.

Our kayaks have weight capacities ranging from 250 to 500 pounds, depending on the model.
No
On average, the 5-mile trip takes about 3 to 5 hours, depending on the river's current and how much you stop to relax or take photos.
Our canoes are versatile! They can accommodate:
Safety is our priority. We provide Coast Guard-approved life jackets upon request for all rentals. We highly recommend them for all paddlers, and specific local laws may require them for children (see our Kids Kayak policy for age-specific requirements).
We recommend bringing:
Safety is our top priority. If there are high winds, lightning, or dangerous water levels, we may pause rentals. We recommend checking the weather 24 hours before your trip. Check our cancel or rescheduling policy for more information.
Canoes are great for beginners! They are very stable. Our staff will give you a quick "101" on how to steer and paddle before you hit the water if needed.
While we do accept walk-ins when possible, we highly recommend reservations, especially for the Jumbo Paddleboard and 6-Man Raft, as we have a limited supply of these specialty items.
Please arrive 15–20 minutes before your scheduled launch time. This gives us enough time to fit your life jackets, handle the paperwork, and give your group a safety briefing.
We want everyone to have a fun and safe time. Glass containers are strictly prohibited on the river for safety reasons. Please use cans or plastic containers and always pack out your trash.
We provide the boat, paddles, and cushions. We recommend bringing your own dry bags for electronics. Pro-tip: A heavy-duty freezer bag works in a pinch for cell phones!
Standard Paddleboards: Best for riders up to 250 lbs.
Jumbo Paddleboards: Designed to support a combined weight of up to 800–1,000 lbs (4 adults).
Paddles do float, but they can get away quickly! If you lose a paddle, try to flag down another group for help. Please note that a replacement fee may apply for equipment that is not returned at the end of the trip.
Canoes/Rafts: Yes! Dogs are welcome in our more stable boats. We recommend bringing a doggy life jacket.
Paddleboards/Kayaks: Only recommended for well-behaved dogs who have experience on the water, as claws can sometimes scratch the surface or cause balance issues.
Absolutely! Fishing is allowed; however, you are responsible for having a valid State Fishing License. Please be careful with hooks around inflatable equipment like the rafts and tubes!
Yes, you are welcome to bring your own as long as it is US Coast Guard-approved. If you aren't sure, our staff can check it for you at the launch.
Leave No Trace! Please do not throw anything into the river. We will provide a steam team trash bag. Take your trash with you!
We recommend stocking up before you arrive. While we may have limited supplies at the check-in booth, it is always best to bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks for the 5-mile journey.
The depth varies! Some spots may be only 2 feet deep (where you might need to "scoot" your tube), while other bends in the river can be 10 feet deep or more. This is why we recommend life jackets regardless of your swimming ability.
Our 5-mile route is classified as Class I (Easy), meaning the water is mostly flat with occasional small ripples. It is perfect for beginners, families, and those looking for a relaxing float.
YES, We accept all major credit cards, Apple Pay, and cash. Taxes are not included in the listed rental prices and will be added at checkout.
